Nigerians will return to the polls on Saturday to elect state governors across the country, two weeks after a disputed presidential election, with the main focus on the race to lead Lagos, the country’s economic heartbeat and wealthiest state.

The election is for 28 of the country’s 36 governors, who are among the most influential politicians in Nigeria, Africa’s biggest economy and largest oil producer. The Ruling All Progressives Congress party’s Bola Tinubu was declared winner of the presidential election with 39% of the vote. But he lost in his home state of Lagos to opposition candidate Peter Obi of the Labour Party, which is aiming to upset APC again in the state.

“It is unprecedented that the party of a sitting Nigerian president doesn’t control his home state. Tinubu, through the APC and its predecessor parties, has always been in charge of Lagos politics.” The APC has sitting governors in 21 states, while the main opposition People’s Democratic Party has 14. The Labour Party is aiming to win its first governorships in this cycle.

Three Charged for Complicity in Cameroonian Journalist's MurderThree Charged for Complicity in Cameroonian Journalist's MurderA military court in Cameroon has reportedly charged three people with complicity in the January torture and killing of journalist Martinez Zogo. Voice of America is quoting Cameroon media as saying that business tycoon and media mogul Jean-Pierre Amougou Belinga, Lieutenant-Colonel Justin Danwe, and Police Commissioner Maxime Eko Eko are being held in a maximum-security prison along with several policemen and civilians. A Yaoundé military tribunal charged the three men on Saturday March 4, 2023 with complicity in the torture that led to Zogo's death in January. Cameroon laws state that crimes involving the use of weapons, especially guns, can be handled by a military court. Seven other suspects detained in a series of February raids, including one on Belinga's house, were released on Saturday without charges. Journalists in Cameroon are calling for justice despite receiving threats since Zogo's killing and, just days later, the killing of Jean Jacques Ola Bebe, a radio host who was also calling for justice.
