Supporters of the military junta in Niger attacked the Embassy of France while expressing support for Russia and its leader Vladimir Putin in the country’s capital Niamey.

, saying: “I strongly welcome and support the leadership of ECOWAS Heads of State and Governments to defend constitutional order in Niger. The legitimate, democratically-elected government must be reinstated immediately.”they had deposed Bazoum in a coup. A few days later Gen. Abdourahmane Tchiani—the leader of the country’s Presidential Guard—was named as the leader of the junta government.

Bazoum initially appeared to receive some support from the country’s military leaders, but they lateron challenging the coup’s leaders to “avoid bloodshed” and prevent infighting. The coup’s leaders accused Bazoum’s regime of failing to keep the country secure from jihadist violence and “poor economic and social governance.” The coup raised alarm in the West as Niger has been seen by France and the U.S. as a reliable ally against extremist groups in the region.
