Britain’s euroskeptic Brexit Party, hoping to stop anti-Brexit parties from forming a coalition to call for a second referendum, won't field candidates in 317 seats held by the Conservatives

Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage said that his upstart party wouldn't field candidates in 317 seats across Britain held by the Conservatives since the 2017 election. He had previously pledged to contest seats in all districts in the Dec. 12 poll.Mr. Farage said the move was aimed at stopping anti-Brexit parties forming a coalition to call for a second referendum to overturn the U.K.’s exit from the European Union.

Pollsters said that Mr. Farage’s party—which calls for an abrupt break from the EU—risked splitting the euroskeptic vote in districts across the U.K., potentially allowing opposition parties to win key districts. “I think our announcement today prevents a second referendum from happening,” Mr. Farage said. “That is the single most important thing for our country.”Copyright ©2019 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.
