“If someone can love me and get me, and not love or get my films…could I live with that in a relationship, romantic or otherwise?” This is the premise of writer-director Nicole Holofcener's latest movie, 'You Hurt My Feelings,' in theaters May 26.
Imagine spending years working on a book, or a movie for that matter, only to find out that your loved one doesn’t like it very much. “It seemed like a perfect nightmare,” says writer-director Nicole Holofcener. “If someone can love me and get me, and not love or get my films…could I live with that in a relationship, romantic or otherwise?” This is the premise of her latest movie,, in theaters May 26.
This relationship is inspired by Holofcener’s real-life experience of motherhood. When it comes to her 25-year-old twin sons—one an aspiring filmmaker, the other a music journalist—“I will give honest feedback if they want it,” she says. “We’re very close and my opinion is important to them. I am very supportive, mostly because I like what they do. Thank God.” But unlike her avatar in the film, Holofcener isn’t afraid to hold back.
Holofcener includes conversations between Beth and her own mother in the film, too—barbed criticisms and all—offering glimpses into the nuances of intergenerational relationships: “what you inherit, what you don’t inherit, the way you can talk to family in a way you can’t talk to anybody else.”Holofcener grew up in New York City before moving to Los Angeles after her mother remarried. As a kid, she loved to write about how the world looked to her—the things that upset her or made her laugh.
