Sports biopics continue to prove popular, as the tale of an underdog's rise to the top of the game paired with the truth behind a real person's story often combines for certain box office success. In 2026, an upcoming John Madden biopic, imaginatively titled Madden, sees Christian Bale portray the late Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis, joined by the acting chameleon Nicolas Cage as the titular Madden.
Sporting a wavy blonde wig and aqua blue tracksuit, set images have already shown Cage in a typically unrecognizable fashion and reminded viewers of his wide variety of performances, both good and bad. One such performance, sadly in the latter of these two subjective categories, is Cage's turn as antihero Johnny Blaze, specifically in the 2011 sequel to the superhero flick Ghost Rider. At the time of writing, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance is one of the ten most-streamed movies on Tubi in the U.S. Starring Cage alongside the likes of Fergus Riordan and Luther's Idris Elba, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance saw Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor take over directing duties from the original Ghost Rider's Mark Steven Johnson. Sadly, this was to little success, with the movie sporting a terrible 18% approval rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with the critics' consensus reading,"With a weak script, uneven CG work, and a Nic Cage performance so predictably loony it's no longer amusing, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance aims to be trashy fun but ends up as plain trash." A synopsis for the movie reads: "Now hiding out in Eastern Europe, Johnny Blaze is still struggling with the curse of the Ghost Rider -- the devil's bounty hunter. Johnny meets a priest named Moreau , who asks Johnny to find a boy named Danny and bring him back. But there's a catch -- Satan is looking for the boy too, and has a personal stake in the matter. But if Johnny can find Danny first and save the boy's soul, there's a chance Johnny can save his own soul as well." Could 'Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance' Redeem Itself at the Box Office? With the film facing huge backlash from audiences and critics, could Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance redeem itself financially? The answer is an unconvincing yes, with the movie earning a respectable $150 million against a reported budget of $57 million. This total is $80 million less than the original movie achieved during its theatrical run, although a $120 million production budget for the first outing actually leaves the sequel more successful at the box office.
