The purchase of the motorhome by Peter Murrell has been revealed as part of his embezzlement trial at Edinburgh High Court. The motorhome industry in the UK is experiencing a boom, with sales of motorhomes and campervans soaring by over 133 per cent in the past year.
A German-made motorhome purchased by Peter Murrell , the estranged husband of Nicola Sturgeon , using SNP funds has been revealed to be the most expensive item on the list of status symbol purchases made by him.
The motorhome, a Niesmann+Bischoff ismove, cost £124,550 and was parked on Murrell's mother's driveway in Dunfermline. The luxury vehicle boasts an opulent interior, including a fully-functioning kitchen, bathroom suite with a ceramic loo and full-size shower. Despite its high price tag, the motorhome was apparently never used, with only four miles on the vehicle's clock.
The purchase of the motorhome comes as the motorhome industry in the UK is experiencing a boom, with sales of motorhomes and campervans soaring by over 133 per cent in the past year. This surge in demand is attributed to factors such as uncertainty in the Middle East and fluctuating fuel costs.
The RV market in the UK is still smaller compared to the US, but it is growing rapidly, with sales of new campervans and motorhomes rising dramatically in the last 30 years. According to Daniel Attwood, editor of MMM, The Motorhomers' Magazine, the sales of new campervans and motorhomes have risen from just under 5,000 in 2000 to 16,666 last year.
In contrast, caravan sales have 'fallen off a cliff', dropping from annual sales of 34,000 in 2006/2007 to around just 7,300 last year. The motorhome industry is innovating rapidly, with the introduction of features such as mini washing machines, solar panels, and toilets that can go for up to five days before they have to be emptied. The prices of top-end motorhomes can range from £50,000 for an entry-level model to over £2 million for a luxury vehicle.
Rob Ganley, Editor-in-Chief at Camping & Caravanning, notes that modern vehicles are becoming increasingly sophisticated, with features such as fully-equipped kitchens, luxurious fixed beds, and modern bathrooms. Some motorhomes even come with air-con units and can be controlled using a smartphone app. The industry is catering to a growing demand for 'home from home' experiences, with vehicles becoming increasingly luxurious and technologically advanced
