Nick Viall and Natalie Joy were chosen to be the hosts of Netflix’s “Age of Attraction” for a reason. The reality series follows couples dating without age in mind. At 18 years apart, Viall and Joy have a significant age gap themselves.
Viall tried to find love on reality TV before. He was in two seasons of “The Bachelorette,” one of “Bachelor in Paradise” and then helmed “The Bachelor.” Ultimately, though, he met Joy through an Instagram DM. Joy used to work as a surgical technologist, a health professional who assists doctors in the operating room, and also as a model. Read on for a timeline of the pair’s relationship, from their first DMs to the birth of their child. July 2020: Viall and Joy Start Dating The pair met when Joy messaged Viall on Instagram. In a July 2022 interview with E! News, Viall detailed the message and their first interactions. “I think DMs are a great place to meet people,” he said. “My current girlfriend slid in my DMs. Real clever, it said, ‘You’re unreal.’ I guess it was funny. I was more curious, wondering why I was unreal.” While the pair kept their relationship under wraps for a few months, they later shared that they officially began dating in July 2020. October 31, 2020: The Pair Soft-Launch Their Relationship via Halloween Costume After hinting at their relationship through social media posts throughout the month, Joy and Viall dressed up as Lois Lane and Superman for Halloween. Joy captioned an Instagram post of her costume, “Fingers crossed i see superman tonight.” Viall later posted in a superman costume. February 8, 2021: Viall Speaks About His Relationship Publicly On an episode of his podcast, “The Viall Files,” Viall spoke about his relationship, without naming Joy. He confirmed, “I’m in a relationship. It’s fun. It’s great. I’m super happy.” “I have those moments of gratitude and thankfulness,” he continued. “There’s moments where I’m like, ‘You’re really great and I’m really happy you’re a part of my life.’” February 12, 2021: Joy Posts Viall for the First Time In an Instagram post, Joy shared her excitement to finally be open about their relationship. She posted a sweet selfie of her and Viall. “It's a complete weight off of my shoulders to finally announce that i am in fact the mastermind behind the plant wall,” she joked in the caption. She wrote this in reference to Viall’s backyard remodel from December 2020. March 21, 2021: Viall’s Friends Approve of Joy Viall and Joy went on a double date with fellow “Bachelor” alums Ashley Iaconetti and her husband Jared Haibon, who met in 2015 on “Bachelor in Paradise.” “She’s everything we hoped he’d find. Perfect complement. 💓” iaconetti captioned an Instagram post with the four of them smiling for a selfie. May 17, 2021: The Couple Make Their Red Carpet Debut At the 2021 MTV Movie & TV Awards: UNSCRIPTED, Viall and Joy stepped out hand in hand. Viall commemorated the occasion with a post to Instagram of the pair on the red carpet. “This was her first time so she didn’t know to look at the camera,” he captioned the photo of Joy looking lovingly at Viall. June 2021: Joy and Viall Become Parents The family expanded for the first time in 2021, when Joy and Viall adopted an Australian Cobberdog they later named Jeff, as he said in an interview with The Pet Collective. July 2021: The Pair Celebrate Their 1-Year Anniversary Even though they do not remember the exact date of their anniversary, Viall and Joy posted to commemorate their relationship. “Celebrating 1 year ish, by visiting the hotel where it all started. Thankful for every moment I have with you @nnataliejjoy,” Viall captioned a sweet photo of the couple posing for a selfie at the Williamsburg Hotel in New York City. Joy also posted to Instagram to celebrate the occasion. She shared several images of the pair and wrote, “this has been the best year of my life, and it’s because of you 🤍.” February 14, 2022: Viall Talks About Potential Engagement In an appearance on “PEOPLE Every Day,' Viall spoke about their compatibility and a potential timeline for their engagement. He said Joy would “love to hear” about an engagement within a year, but emphasizes that “everyone’s situations is different.” “I think sometimes timelines can be a little bit dangerous about, you know, setting false expectations and reaching to a certain timeline and all of a sudden ... have other priorities,” he said. “I just kind of tell people to just be careful about setting timelines. If they want to set a time, it’s great, just make sure it’s mutual.” The year before, while a guest on the “Not Skinny But Not Fast“ podcast, host Amanda Hirsch asked Viall if he could see himself marrying Joy. “I wouldn’t be in a relationship with her if I didn’t think it was possible, you know?” he said. “She’s the first person I’ve called my girlfriend, minus TV, in a long, long time.” June 8, 2022: Viall Talks About Their Age Gap In a June episode of the “Call her Daddy“ podcast hosted by Alex Cooper, Viall spoke about the pair’s 18 year age-gap, explaining he felt “self-conscious” at the beginning of their relationship. “It was something I had to get over. And it was a me problem,” he said. “I always remember talking to certain friends and I would be, like, wishing that that gap didn’t exist because I would feel less nervous about it.” He went on to explain that the age difference itself was never an issue, just his fear of how their relationship was perceived by others. “The more I got to know her, the more I was just going to her for advice or just checking in with her. I just felt like we met each other on the same wavelength and I always felt like she was my equal,” he said. “I’m a big personality. I don’t always feel like people, regardless of age, I can connect with. And with her, I never felt that disconnect.” January 12, 2023: Viall and Joy Get Engaged In a joint Instagram post on January 12, Viall and Joy shared news of their engagement. “For the rest of my life, it’s you,” Viall captioned the post, alongside a carousel of images of the pair. The pair got engaged in Venice, California after nearly two and a half years together. July 10, 2023: The Pair Celebrate Their Third Anniversary with a New Home The engaged couple celebrated their third anniversary at their new lake house, according to photos to Instagram. Viall shared earlier in the week that they had repurchased the lake house that his family had lost 32 years prior. “After losing the house 32 years ago, I finally brought it back in the family. I had recurring dreams my entire life since we lost the house in 1990 about some how having the house back in our finally. I always woke up. Im living a literal dream. No more waking up from this one,” Viall captioned a post to Instagram to reveal the surprise. This marked their first anniversary as an engaged couple. “I love our family we’ve started together can’t wait to see how it grows. Thanks for 3 incredible years and for always fighting for us. Can’t wait for the rest of our lives together,” Viall gushed about his fiancée in a July 11 post on Instagram. August 8, 2023: Viall and Joy Announce They Are Expecting Their First Child Paired with a black and white photo of Viall holding Joy’s stomach, the couple announced they were expecting their first child. Joy captioned the Instagram post “our biggest dream came true,” and attached a picture of a sonogram. A month later, the pair announced they would be having a baby girl, through a heartwarming joint Instagram post. February 2, 2024: Viall and Joy Welcome Their Daughter Viall and Joy shared that River Rose Viall war born through a carousel of images of the newborn. The girl was named after Joy’s great grandmother and niece. “the best part of life starts now 🦢🕊️☁️💗,” Viall captioned the post. April 27, 2024: The Pair Ties the Knot Nearly three months after the birth of their first child and almost four years together, Viall and Joy got married in a picturesque ceremony at her family’s 300-acre farm outside of Savannah, Georgia. “It’s a place that has always been very special to Natalie,” Viall told People in an interview. “When I first visited, I was struck by its expansive landscape and vibrant colors.” Celebrity guests of the wedding included Jojo Siwa, and fellow Bachelor Nation alums and Viall’s close friends, Jared Haibon and Ashley Iaconetti. Joy walked down the aisle holding baby River Rose in her arms, who was wearing a white dress and bonnet. 2025: Joy Shares Her Experience with Three Miscarriages In a January 2025 episode of 'The Viall Files' called “Going Deeper — Our Miscarriage Story,” Joy explained she was “actively miscarrying.” “I’ve never experienced something where I feel so empty inside,” Joy said. “My sister has had 12 miscarriages, and it’s like you feel sad and you want to be there for these people, but you don’t really know the loss that they feel until you go through it yourself.” One week later, Joy posted to her Instagram story to show her and Viall got angel wing tattoos to remember their loss. “with me forever my sweet angel baby 🤍🪽,” Joy wrote on top of an image of her and Viall’s tattoos. Joy shared she experienced another miscarriage on March 23, 2025. “While mourning the loss of our second baby at the beginning of this year, I quickly and very unexpectedly found out I was pregnant again,” Joy began. “It took some time for me to accept what had happened, only to be handed another chance so easily and so fast. But eventually, I found so much happiness. We were finally in a place of complete and utter gratitude. This past week, I miscarried again.” On August 17, 2025, she posted to her Instagram story: “Hi friends ❤️ Wanted to thank everyone for the love and support after sharing that we experienced our 3rd miscarriage,” Joy wrote. I’m working very closely with my doctors that I love and trust and eager to find out what’s going on so we don’t experience this heartbreak for a 4th time. love yall.” February 4, 2026: Viall and Joy announce they are expecting twins In a joyful post to Instagram, Joy announced she was pregnant again, and this time with twins. “our rainbow babies are finally ready to join us and this time it’s TWINS,” she wrote. The post showed two-year old River Rose in a sweater with “Big sis” written in cursive, and Viall and Joy holding pictures of a sonogram. Joy can also be seen holding her baby bump. On Feb. 19, Joy posted a video where Viall popped two balloons to reveal the sex of their twins. When the balloons popped, pink confetti and balloons exploded from both of them, announcing the pair is expecting two baby girls. March 9, 2026: The Pair Share Their Excitement for ‘Age of Attraction’ In an interview with Netflix’s Tudum, the pair talked about why they are so excited for the show, and how it is similar to the other hit Netflix unconventional dating show “Love Is Blind.” “If you’re someone who wants to find love and is having a hard time doing it, maybe opening up your mind to the possibility of partners that you didn’t before could be a great thing,” Viall said. “It certainly was for me.” “There’s not a lot of positive information out there about age-different relationships,” Joy explained. “But watching this show, you just see these beautiful relationships unfold and realize that age really doesn’t matter. It goes out the window completely. By the end of it, you’re like, ‘Oh my God, I’m rooting for them. I love them. I hope they get married and have babies.’”
