Canadian golfer Nick Taylor bested England’s Tommy Fleetwood in a playoff to win the 2023 RBC Canadian Open on Sunday. He sank a 72-foot putt to seal the victory.
Taylor is the fourth Canadian to win on the PGA Tour this season, joining Mackenzie Hughes, Adam Svensson and Corey Conners. The last of that trio was greenside along with Adam Hadwin and Mike Weir, the godfather of Canadian golf, for all four playoff holes.Point being: Twenty-some years of efforts to grow the game up north are paying off, and for one of their own to finally win the national championship is a special, special moment.
But we should also say a word about the scene, which was so damn good all afternoon but crested throughout the four-hole playoff. After a week and a year that have been about everything but the golf, it was a fun escape to see huge galleries enthralled in the twists and turns. Everyone had a great time, with the possible exception of the overzealous security guard tackling Hadwin and a bottle of a champagne. —Taylor turned pro in 2010.
On Saturday, Taylor shot a 9-under 63. It’s the sixth time since 2000 a Canadian shot 63 or better at Canada’s national open. It was also a course record at Oakdale Golf and Country Club, the site of the Canadian Open.
