Nick Schmaltz’s first career hat trick opened the scoring as the Coyotes (16-28-5) blanked the St. Louis Blues 5-0 at Mullett Arena on Thursday.

Justin Faulk nearly gave the Blues a lead in the first period after his shot from the point slipped past Vejmelka at 5:04, but the goal was swiftly disallowed after video replay showed Blues center Robert Thomas hit Vejmelka over the shoulder for a goaltender interference call.The Blues fell shorthanded almost five minutes into the second period when Thomas absorbed a slap shot attempt from defenseman Torey Krug and had to be helped off the ice.
Hayton’s relentless efforts on the forecheck eventually caused Blues right winger Jordan Kyrou to lose control of the puck. Schmaltz was right there and used his speed and skill for his second in the period at 13:56.
