Missing his top two wideouts, Justin Herbert, looking healthy after the bye, found himself down 10-0 by the end of the first quarter and seemingly needed a ladder instead of the foot stool he was given to get out of the hole. Then, like the Gershwins, he got rhythm. His receivers finally found some open spaces and he found them — when they hung onto the ball.
Matt Feiler was downfield illegally to nullify a nice pass play near the end.Defense got whipped early with some horrible tackling on a 44-yard run and allowed 92 yards rushing in the first quarter before calming down — until the first drive of the third, when everyone got raked until the Khalil Mack strip. Austin Johnson damaged a leg, further weakening a front getting pummeled on the ground.Mack had the play of the game, stripping the ball from a receiver to stop a drive near the goal line.
