Thirty-five years ago last week — without warning, without a moment for preparation, and with the world watching on live TV — a 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck the Bay Area. For 15 terrible seconds, the earth seemed determined to rid itself of San Francisco.
The Cypress Freeway in Oakland failed tragically. A portion of the Bay Bridge collapsed, sending at least one vehicle careening off a road no longer there to meet it. Other bridges closed for safety, and San Francisco International Airport stopped all traffic. The only way in or out of San Francisco was south to the Peninsula. For a while, it seemed, we were on our own.
