While reflecting on John Woo's Face/Off, Nicolas Cage recalled one scene in which he felt like he left his body and truly became his character. 'I got scared, am I acting or is this real?'

Actor Nicolas Cage recalls feeling like he left his own body in an intense scene from 1997's Face/Off. Directed by legendary action director John Woo, Face/Off stars Cage as a terrorist named Castor Troy who shares a bitter rivalry with John Travolta's Sean Archer, an F.B.I. agent hot on his trail. When Troy is captured and put in a coma, a radical medical procedure is done to swap the faces of Troy and Archer, so that Archer can stop a devastating bomb from going off in L.A.

Cage had starred in a number of dramatic and comedic roles up until the mid-90s, when he began taking on more action parts, starting with Michael Bay's The Rock in 1996. He followed that with the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced hit, Con Air, before jumping into Woo's Face/Off, a high-concept actioner that was previously a sci-fi film set in the future, repurposed to modern day to fit the director's preference.

There was a moment in there where I think I actually left my body. I got scared, am I acting or is this real? I can see it if I look at the movie, that one moment, it’s in my eyes. Cage worked with Woo again in the war film Windtalkers in 2002, before balancing out his action roles with more of the quirky roles that got him there in the first place. Since Face/Off, Cage has starred in a string of hits, but his career took a dip in later years as he faced some tax issues that put him in a financial crunch.

Nicolas Cage's over-the-top performances, such as Face/Off, have become a staple of his career with viewers typically waiting for the moment that he "loses it" in whatever new film he's appearing in. While Cage will frequently appease audiences with his signature wacky style, he's also continued to prove that he's an actor of significant skill and talent, depending on the role he's in.
