“It was inside my swimming costume'
A Lough Neagh swimmer has told of her panic after finding deadly blue-green algae on her swimming costume after arriving home to her pets this week.
But now she fears the blue-green algae is returning with a vengeance - and says she’s concerned for pets, wildlife and water users. Huge algal blooms form when pollution from farm run-off and sewage meet hot temperatures and sunlight causing eutrophication. “We had that period of hot weather combined with the water not moving very much and obviously the nitrates in the water, is why we think we got such a bad touch of it this year.
“That’s not usual - they don’t open those gates unless the lough is above the statutory limit or they are expecting a lot of rainfall. “To support her a lot of the groups are doing a virtual channel swim and raising funds to train Bluetits up in water safety.Mary says the algae has impacted the challenge “to the point where we have to think is it actually safe to get into the Lough”.
