September 21 is World Alzheimer's Day
Research by scientists could lead to earlier diagnosis for Alzheimer's disease to allow more people to benefit from breakthrough new medicines.
This comes just weeks after evidence was released tht showed that a new drug, known as donanemab, can slow the rate of memory and thinking decline in Alzheimer's patients. The researchers in Derry are aiming to find quicker ways to diagnose patients by finding 'biomarkers' in blood samples. “Another area of research at the Personalised Medicine Centre is drug repurposing studies, in which researchers are looking at drug treatments that exist for other conditions to establish if they may be effective in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.
"We are very grateful to members of the public who are actively participating within our clinical studies. Research offers hope to many families affected by dementia and, without their participation, new medical developments would not be possible. “Additionally, there are some safety concerns which mean that patients taking these drugs have to be closely monitored through MRI scans which are associated with additional clinical time and access to MRI infrastructure that is not widely available to the populations in many low- and middle- income countries."
