The Health Events NI team have organised a Menopause Masterclass later this month to coincide with World Menopause Day

Menopause remains a taboo subject in many parts of the world including here in Northern Ireland and yet women are continuing to struggle with the symptoms in their home, workplace and communities.

Perimenopause occurs when you have symptoms of menopause but your periods have not stopped. Perimenopause ends and you reach menopause when you have not had a period for 12 months. As a result, the Health Events NI team have organised a Menopause Masterclass later this month to coincide with World Menopause Day on October 18.

"When you mention the word menopause, people would nearly scurry away or if you say the word period, someone would nearly faint. We just need to get over the fear of mentioning the word. Women's health in general remains a very private subject that people are afraid to discuss. "Women also tell us that they feel very embarrassed about having to tell their male managers that they're menopausal. Instead they use other excuses such as headache or back pain just to try and compensate for the difficulties they're facing when off sick or when their productivity is reduced.

Margaret added: "We are a group of experienced and passionate health professionals who have identified the huge gap in the provision of credible, evidenced based advice for women throughout the stages of menopause.
