The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into complaints alleging that General Motors vehicles equipped with certain V8 engines, including the popular Silverado pickup truck, can experience unexpected engine failures.

U.S. auto safety regulators have initiated an investigation into complaints alleging that General Motors vehicles equipped with specific V8 engines, including its flagship Silverado pickup truck, can unexpectedly experience engine failure.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the investigation on Thursday, stating that it is examining an estimated 877,710 vehicles following the receipt of 39 consumer complaints related to vehicles equipped with L87 V8 engines. The NHTSA emphasized that complainants reported a complete lack of warning signs preceding the engine failure, which can significantly elevate the risk of a crash resulting in potential injuries and/or property damage. Regulators explained that a bearing failure within the engine can lead to seizure or a breach in the engine block caused by a connecting rod. The preliminary investigation encompasses a range of GM models, including: 2019-2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500; 2021-2024 Chevrolet Tahoe; 2021-2024 Chevrolet Suburban; 2019-2024 GMC Sierra 1500; 2021-2024 GMC Yukon; 2021-2024 GMC Yukon XL; 2021-2024 Cadillac Escalade; and 2021-2024 Cadillac Escalade ESV. General Motors, the leading automaker in the U.S. in 2024, achieved a 4.3% increase in sales for the year, marking its most successful performance since 2019. Its Silverado pickup truck solidified its position as the second best-selling vehicle in the U.S. during the previous year
