The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has decided to postpone a massive recall of nearly 50 million airbag inflators produced by ARC Automotive Inc. after the auto industry raised concerns about the scope of the recall. The agency had previously planned to recall all inflators due to a risk of explosion and injury, but now says further investigation is needed to determine if all inflators are defective. The investigation will focus on technical and engineering differences between inflators used in vehicles from various manufacturers.

The agency has said inflators in about 49 million vehicles from 13 manufacturers are at risk of exploding and hurling shrapnel into drivers and passengers. They're responsible for at least seven injuries and two deaths in the U.S. and Canada since 2009, and recalling all of them would have cost millions of dollars.
The agency said that in the coming weeks, it will send more information request letters to ARC, vehicle manufacturers, and airbag module manufacturing companies. In a supplemental decision in July, NHTSA said seven ARC inflators have ruptured in the field in the U.S., each showing evidence of insufficient welds or too much pressure in a canister designed to contain the explosion and fill the airbags in a crash.

NHTSA Halts Recall Plan for Nearly 50 Million Air Bag InflatorsU.S. auto safety regulators have paused their plan to recall nearly 50 million air bag inflators made by ARC Automotive Inc. after the auto industry raised concerns about whether all the inflators are defective. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) initially decided in January to recall the inflators, citing safety risks and multiple reported injuries and deaths linked to their potential to explode and hurl shrapnel. However, the auto industry argued that variations in manufacturing processes and engineering designs between different ARC inflators across various vehicle manufacturers necessitate further investigation.
