Ms Ryan said none of her family, including her eight-month-old grandson, would ‘be here today’ if her daughters hadn’t woken her up

An NHS worker has been left devastated after a neighbour’s Bank Holiday barbecue accidentally set her house on fire, leaving her homeless.

Ms Ryan, who works for the Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Foundation Trust, said none of her family, including her eight-month-old grandson, would ‘be here today’ if her daughters hadn’t woken her up.Their roof was completely destroyed by the blaze : ‘It was like something out of a horror movie, you don’t expect to live through it. My kids were crying and screaming and I couldn’t even console them because I was just in shock.

She continued: ‘She was shaking on the floor. I was holding her hand and telling her everything was going to be okay and that the fire was out, which was a lie because I was watching my house go up in smoke.’ Tomorrow she’ll go back to work, where she answers calls from people with severe anxiety and depression and books them appointments. Her middle daughter, who was let go from her cinema job, will also return to work at Asda.It is not clear how long it will be until the family are rehomed
