The NHL recently relocated the Phoenix Coyotes franchise to Salt Lake City with the promise of a new name. Remarkably, they needed 2 months to pick this winner.
On April 12, Arizona Coyotes general manager Bill Armstrong met with players to confirm that the rumors were true: the NHL was selling the team to Ryan and Ashley Smith, owners of the Utah Jazz. The team had played its final game in Phoenix and would be relocated to Salt Lake City for the 2024-25 season.Among the first items of business: choosing a new name for the franchise.
In the meantime, Utah must emblazon a uniform set with its logo and nickname, such as it is. The visual package the team released befits the level of pizzazz its nickname evokes:According to the AP, there is no timeline for when permanent branding and logos will be revealed.For fans in the Salt Lake City area, permanent branding can wait. The region acquired its first major pro sports team when the New Orleans Jazz relocated ahead of the 1979-80 season.
