Questions about the zoning rights for a plot of land in Phoenix stopped the auction of a potential site where the owner of the NHL's Arizona Coyotes wanted to build a new arena for an expansion team. Less than a week later, not only will those questions not be resolved — it appears Alex Meruelo will drop his bid to bring a new team to the desert altogether.
Coyotes owner Alex Meruelo wanted to build a new NHL arena on the site as part of an 'entertainment district' that also included a practice facility, live music theater, offices, restaurants, retail space, and 1,900 luxury residential units. The ASLD questioned whether the site was zoned for a construction project of that scope, saying the proposed development would need a special use permit. The department asked the Coyotes to secure the permit before buying the land.
