San Jose Sharks entered Monday’s draft lottery with a 9.5 percent chance of landing the No. 1 overall selection
The San Jose Sharks didn’t quite get the outcome they were looking for during Monday’s NHL Draft Lottery. But it wasn’t the worst result, either.
But the odds also indicated that the Sharks could just as easily fall back in the draft order. They had a 44.6 percent chance of dropping to No. 5 and a 20.8 percent chance of falling to sixth. That’s because the teams that finished fifth through 11th in the NHL’s overall standings were also eligible select first overall, and the 12th-place team, Ottawa, was eligible to move up to No. 2. Teams had a chance to move up a maximum of 10 spots.
Fourteen ping pong balls were placed in a lottery machine, enough for 1,001 possible combinations. Each lottery team is assigned a set of random four-number combinations, so the Sharks received 95 combinations.
