The Auditor-General of South Africa has welcomed the judgment as an endorsement of her office's independence, but the applicant may still pursue access to the reports. | News24_Business

Despite the arguably significant public interest, the High Court has ruled that the Auditor-General South Africa is not obliged to release management reports which would give the public greater insight into decay and mismanagement within SA municipalities.

The Gauteng High Court in Pretoria's ruling comes after Sakeliga – a non-profit organisation – approached the court for an order to have the Auditor-General release management reports issued in relation to 154 municipalities across SA, covering the financial years spanning 2015 to 2021.Get 14 days free to read all our investigative and in-depth journalism. This was confirmed by South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa on Thursday, July 13, 2023, according to Eyewitness News, writes Jerry Chifamba for AllAfrica. This follows controversy around the attendance of Russian leader, President Vladimir Putin after the International Criminal Court in the Hague, issued a warrant for his arrest for war crimes in Ukraine. The warrant holds South Africa responsible for arresting Putin. The South African government issued the invitation to Putin before the warrant was issued and it is causing a foreign relations nightmare. To sidestep arresting the leader, Putin's virtual attendance was mooted. The shifting of the summit to China was also explored but it was turned down. South Africa has since awarded diplomatic immunity to all foreign dignitaries attending the Brics summit, in an attempt to avoid arresting Putin.

South African Apex Court Orders Jacob Zuma Back to JailSouth African Apex Court Orders Jacob Zuma Back to JailA request to reverse the Supreme Court of Appeal's (SCA) decision that former President Jacob Zuma must serve his remaining jail sentence has been rejected by the Constitutional Court, according to EWN. Earlier this year, the Supreme Court of Appeal affirmed the Pretoria High Court's December 2021 verdict. The decision to release Zuma on medical parole by former Correctional Services Commissioner Arthur Fraser was reviewed and overturned by the court. Zuma was initially imprisoned in July 2021 for refusing to obey a court order to appear before a commission of inquiry into the government and private sector corruption which flourished during his presidency. He was admitted to an outside hospital for medical observation. Zuma's jailing triggered widespread violence in two of South Africa' provinces. Looters vandalised shopping malls, other retail outlets, businesses, factories and infrastructure with over 1,000 people arrested as a result.
