The Eagles made a trade to get the 40th overall pick in the second round Friday night.
Iowa cornerback Cooper DeJean, the Eagles' second-round pick Friday, returns a punt for a touchdown last season in a game against Michigan State.because he was the best player on their draft board, and he meant it because the cornerback was higher than No. 22 on every NFL draft board.
He can play outside cornerback. He can play in the slot. He can play as a safety in the box or a safety deep. And did we mention thatAfter being selected eight picks into the second round, DeJean was just thrilled that the draft process was finally over and he was now an Eagle. He had visited with the team during the pre-draft process.
“All I wanted was an opportunity to play,” DeJean said. “There was a little frustration yesterday, but I’m excited with where I’m at being in Philadelphia ... getting back to playing football. I was getting tired of this pre-draft process, so I’m excited to getting back to just playing football.” DeJean said he embraces his versatility label, but would also love the opportunity to be the NFL’s first white outside cornerback in more than two decades. Jason Sehorn of the Giants was the last white cornerback to consistently start. His career ended in 2003 after 10 games with the St. Louis Rams.
In addition to his work in the Iowa secondary, DeJean also returned 31 punts and one kick during his three seasons with the Hawkeyes. He averaged 13.1 yards per punt return and returned one punt for a touchdown last season. He also had three interception returns for touchdowns. Veteran Darius Slay is probably safe for another season, but James Bradberry’s days are likely over with the Eagles. DeJean’s arrival should probably leave veteran Avonte Maddox about his re-signing with the team as well.
