Five head-coaching jobs have been filled. Five remain.
Longtime NFL quarterback Philip Rivers never reached a Super Bowl and has never been a coach, but the Bills interviewed him for their head-coaching job Friday.Five down? That’s the answer to the number of head-coaching jobs that have been filled so far during this extra busy cycle.
Kevin Stefanski, fired in Cleveland, has resurfaced in Atlanta, replacing Raheem Morris. Jesse Minter, after spending four years as a defensive coordinator under Jim Harbaugh , has replaced John Harbaugh in Baltimore. This is proof that the degrees of coaching separation rarely reach five when a Harbaugh is involved. Jeff Hafley, after four seasons as the head coach at Boston College and two as the defensive coordinator with the Packers, is now the head man in Miami, replacing Mike McDaniel.is back in a head role with the Titans after just one season as the defensive coordinator with the 49ers. Brian Callahan and Mike McCoy both got a crack at coaching the Titans in 2025 and after the team’s 3-14 season they have a combined career record of 33-65. Meanwhile, Mike Vrabel, the man that Callahan replaced two years ago, is 16-3 with the Patriots this season and one win away from the Super Bowl. Five blank spaces remain on the coaching crossword puzzle, so let’s take a look at each of those as we get ready for Sunday’s AFC and NFC championship games.By far, the most appealing job and the fascinating search is in Buffalo. Everybody was a bit surprised earlier this week to learn that Sean McDermott was out after nine seasons. During that time he went to the playoffs eight times and won five AFC East titles, but that wasn’t enough to satisfy owner Terry Pegula in a city with a tortured postseason history. And so now, with the help of quarterback Josh Allen and general manager Brandon Beane, he’s searching high and low for the man to finish the job. The list of candidates is long and somewhat scintillating. Philip Rivers joined the cast Friday when he was interviewed by the team even though he has never been a coach and as a quarterback he never played in a Super Bowl. It would be one hell of a story if he was the guy to finish the job for the Bills. Daboll — former Giants coach and Bills offensive coordinator — is in the mix, too, as is McDaniel, who went 2-7 against McDermott’s Bills over the last four seasons. A lot of people in Buffalo think the next coach of the Bills should be McDermott, and they’ve startedseeking the reinstatement of the team’s recently fired coach. It had more than 55,000 signatures by 4 p.m. Friday. For coaches in search of job security, Pittsburgh has always been the most desired NFL destination. Chuck Noll was the head coach for 23 years and won four Super Bowls. Bill Cowher was the head coach for 15 years and won one Super Bowl and lost another. Mike Tomlin was the head coach for 19 years and also won one Super Bowl and lost another. That’s three coaches in 57 years. Here’s another interesting fact: Noll, Cowher and Tomlin all had defensive roots. Brian Flores and Anthony Weaver, the two coaches to get second interviews so far, were both defensive coordinators last season. Flores has spent the last three seasons as the Vikings’ DC and Weaver has spent the last two seasons in the DC role with the Dolphins. Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula could interview for the job next week with the Steelers. The Steelers also have Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero on their list of candidates. The biggest name among the Steelers’ candidates is Mike McCarthy, the former head coach of the Packers and Cowboys. Klay Kubiak, the 49ers offensive coordinator, and Nate Scheelhaase, the Rams passing game coordinator, are also on the Steelers’ list of people they want to interview.Cleveland went to the playoffs twice in six years under Stefanski, but were 8-26 the last two seasons while using seven different quarterbacks as starters. They have a top-tier defense, which may be why they are considering Jim Schwartz as the team’s next head coach. The architect of the Eagles’ 2017 championship defense hasn’t been a head coach since 2013 when he closed out an underwhelming five-year stay with the Lions. Schwartz is one of two candidates to get a second interview. The other is Todd Monken, who spent the last three seasons as the Ravens’ offensive coordinator. The Giants are among the teams that would love to land Monken as an OC.The Raiders have shown interest in a lot of people after their failed one-year experiment of trying to win with an aging coach and quarterback . If they’re smart, they’ll go young this time, starting with the selection of Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza with the first overall pick. They should also go with an offensive mind who has had success developing quarterbacks. Here’s the list of offensive coaches the Raiders have completed interviews with: McDaniel, Brady, Scheelhaase, Rams offensive coordinator, Mike LaFleur, Chiefs OC Matt Nagy, Seattle OC Klint Kubiak and Broncos QB coach Davis Webb. This qualifies as the least attractive opening on the board. The future at quarterback is in doubt and the defense tumbled to the bottom of the league during Jonathan Gannon’s final season as head coach. If they were smart, they’d pick the best available candidate from the Super Bowl teams, which could well be Klint Kubiak, the OC of the Seahawks.Bob Brookover has been the Eagles beat reporter at NJ Advance Media since November of 2023. He joined the organization as a Giants beat writer in September 2022 after a 40-year career covering Philadelphia...
