OPINION: 'It appears to me that Dave Yost would support at least one abortion exemption – for 10-year-old rape victims. Or he may not. Either way, it makes sense to find out,' writes columnist Eric Foster.
We now know the story was not a lie. The same day as Jim Jordan’s “fake news” claim, Gerson Fuentesafter he admitted that he raped the girl twice, according to police. In response, Jordan deleted his tweet.
I don’t think Dr. Barnard would need or want such an empty apology. She might want something a little more tangible. Something that rhymes with “condensation” or “honey.” Asking Yost and Jordan to apologize doesn’t make much sense. However, there is something else that would make a more sensible ask. Perhaps we can ask them to work to ensure that the next 10-year-old who is raped does not have to travel to another state to get an abortion. Considering Yost’s own statements, this ask has a greater chance of being granted.
Yost is right about the medical issues in this context. Carrying a baby to term is more dangerous as a pre-teen or teen than it is in later years. In January 2020, the World Health Organization reported that pregnancy and childbirth complications are. Additionally, adolescent mothers aged 10-19 face higher risks of pregnancy complications like seizures and systemic infections than women aged 20-24 years.
Still, only time will tell. As we all must sadly acknowledge; minors do get raped. As recently as last week, aI understand being angry at Yost and Jordan for their doubts. Their comments fed into a narrative which likely caused harassment towards Dr. Barnard. And on the off chance that the young girl heard about their doubts, it is indeed hurtful to hear powerful people deny your personal trauma.
