Factorial has announced the shipment of its first solid-state lithium-metal battery cells for drone use to Avidrone Aerospace.
Factorial, a US company specializing in solid-state battery technology, has achieved an important step in aerospace energy systems. The company has shipped its lithium-metal battery cells to Avidrone Aerospace, a Canadian company that develops long-range unmanned aerial systems .
This marks the debut of Factorial’s proprietary FEST platform in the drone sector, initiating its first real-world flight integration.Solid-state EV battery for dronesAvidrone will incorporate the FEST cells into its high-endurance cargo UAVs for demonstration flights. These tests will evaluate the battery’s performance under operational stresses, including extreme temperatures, high-altitude operation, and continuous vibration, conditions typical in tactical and industrial drone missions. The objectives include validating gains in power delivery, flight endurance, payload capability, and energy efficiency.Initial modeling by Avidrone suggests that integrating FEST solid-state cells could double the aircraft’s range for a given payload. This performance leap could redefine mission parameters for unmanned systems across defense, logistics, and emergency response sectors.“This delivery is a major step forward in bringing our battery platform to the skies,” said Siyu Huang, CEO of Factorial. “Avidrone’s specialized platform is the ideal testbed to demonstrate how our high-energy, lightweight lithium-metal technology can unlock new levels of capability in aerial systems. Drones aren’t just an emerging technology but a strategic component of national defense, critical logistics, and infrastructure resilience.”50% more energy densitySolid-state battery technology represents a significant advancement over traditional lithium-ion systems. Factorial’s FEST platform delivers up to 50% more energy density, a critical metric in UAV operations where the energy-to-weight ratio directly impacts endurance and mission scope. Unlike flammable liquid electrolyte systems, FEST relies on a solid electrolyte, improving thermal stability and reducing the risk of catastrophic failure during high-stress operations.“In unmanned systems, weight equals range, and range defines the mission,” said Scott Gray, Founder and CEO of Avidrone. “Factorial’s solid-state cells give us a critical edge in endurance and payload, enabling new capabilities for defense and commercial operators alike.”This development comes when the global UAS market is undergoing rapid growth. Market forecasts indicate the drone sector will expand by $36.1 billion between 2024 and 2028. Military UAS applications alone are projected to reach $65 billion by 2032, driven by increasing demand for ISR , electronic warfare, and logistics missions. Solid-state batteries are expected to become a core enabling technology in this evolution due to their high energy density, safety profile, and performance in extreme environments. For Factorial, the drone sector represents more than just a secondary market. It is a strategically aligned domain that allows early application of its technology in mission-critical systems. The aerial platform serves as a proving ground to refine manufacturing, validate field performance, and meet demand for secure, U.S.-developed energy storage systems, all while providing insights applicable to the company’s core electric vehicle roadmap. As nations increasingly look for domestically sourced and militarily reliable energy systems, Factorial’s entry into UAV applications positions it as a dual-use innovator. This milestone flight test is a validation of its technology and a launchpad for future aerospace integration.
