The troops will help with X-ray and physical inspections of vehicles in the effort to combat drug smuggling from Mexico

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday ordered a 50 percent increase in the number of National Guard troops at ports of entry along the California-Mexico border in an effort to combat the ongoing fentanyl and opioid crisis.

The governor’s announcement increases the total number of guards members from 40 to 60 across five U.S.-Mexico border ports of entry: Otay Mesa, San Ysidro, Tecate and Calexico East and West, officials said.

With military personnel assigned to monitor the X-ray machines and complete vehicle checks for cleverly hidden drugs inside of cars, truck beds or pallets of produce and goods, CBP officers are given more time to collect information and investigate cases, officials said. As of July 1, the California National Guard has seized over 11,760 pounds of fentanyl this year at ports of entry — totaling millions of dollars in street value, Newsom’s office said Thursday.
