When asked by SFGATE to clarify whether Newsom was characterizing all opponents of the development at People's Park as 'NIMBYs,' the governor's office replied that it had 'nothing else to add.'
"California cannot afford to be held hostage by NIMBYs who weaponize [state law] to block student and affordable housing,"."This selfish mindset is driving up housing prices, and making our state less affordable."
An acronym that stands for"not in my backyard," NIMBY is a pejorative term often associated with wealthy property owners who oppose new housing or other"undesirable" development projects from being built where they live. While some opponents of the construction at People's Park undoubtedly fit that description, other project critics — such as student activists at UC Berkeley — do not.
When asked by SFGATE to clarify whether Newsom was characterizing all opponents of the development at People's Park as"NIMBYs," the governor's office replied that it had"nothing else to add." A few wealthy Berkeley homeowners should not be able to block desperately needed student housing for years and even decades.
CEQA needs to change and we are committed to working with the legislature so California can build more housing.
