This is the first time that training has been mandatory for all new mayors and councilmembers. New legislation requires 40 hours of training during their first term in office.

) - In less than a week, the winners of Alabama ’s recent municipal elections will be sworn into office, but what about those first-timers that have never held an elected position? How will they become acclimated to their new role?is aiming to make that transition a bit easier, with four orientation training events across the state, including Montgomery .

Over 400 newly elected local leaders from across the state are gathering in the ballroom of Montgomery’s Renaissance Hotel this week with the goal of learning the ropes. “When you’re elected, you don’t really know your role as a mayor or councilman so to be able to get educated on that and things like bid laws and the Open Meetings Act and all the legal aspects of being an elected official, it’s really important,” said Mayor Sherry Sullivan of Fairhope, who also serves as the President of the Alabama League of Municipalities. The training isn’t just for first-timers, it can prove useful for the most experienced navigators of city hall. “I’ve been to several of these things, and I learn something different every time I come, it’s important because things change, legislature changes, the ethics laws change, the way you do your budget changes,” explained Mayor Rusty Jessup of Riverside, the Vice President of the Alabama League of Municipalities. “You’ve got to stay up with it, if you don’t, you’re going to make a mistake that’s going to cost your city tax dollars or a lot of embarrassment.”New legislation“We were behind that, we think it’s good,” said Jessup. “We think it’s best for Alabama if the people they elect are trained.”will be November 5 & 6 in Huntsville, and November 12 & 13 in Daphne. Not reading this story on the WSFA News App?
