Alonso Gonzalez, a newly appointed Chula Vista City Council member, has had a string of business, personal and financial hardships that were not disclosed when he applied for the position.
“I was rebellious at that time,” he said. “That being said, that was a decade ago. I’ve since gotten married, had a family and kind of see my role very differently.” Gonzalez said he just never got around to completing the process and says he has been operating as a sole proprietor. California does not require a license to run a sole proprietorship.According to the state Department of Real Estate, he remains licensed. Gonzalez listed his annual income as a broker between $10,000 and $100,000, according to an economic interest disclosure form he submitted to the city.
Public records also show that a property he and his father owned in San Diego was repossessed in 2009 by the bank when they defaulted on the loan. Gonzalez’s appointment has also raised public concerns about his background and whether it should disqualify him from leading the county’s second-largest city, which has a budget of more thanIn acknowledging public concern days after his appointment, Gonzalez said that “nothing from my past would be a distraction from my service.”
