Football Insider has learned that Brentford star Ivan Toney does not fit the profile of striker Newcastle United will target in January.
It is believed a number of other Premier League sides are also ready to swoop for Toney.However, a well-placed source has toldIt is believed they are keen to bring a less polished option to St James’ Park with the potential to learn and grow under Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson by playing a supporting role.Toney started his senior career at Newcastle but made just four appearances before departing for Peterborough in 2018.
He has since flourished into a top-class Premier League forward since achieving promotion with Brentford in 2021. The 27-year-old returned to Brentford training on 17 September after being suspended from all football-related activity back in May.The England international managed 21 goals and five assists in 35 games across all competitions last season – including a best-ever return of 20 strikes in the Premier League.Newcastle, spearheaded by Isak and Wilson, now sit eighth in the Premier League after beating Burnley 2-0 on Saturday .
