A witness told officers that he found the newborn just after 3 a.m. on the sidewalk on Nolan Street and North Cherry Street, east of Downtown San Antonio. The witness said that he found the newborn wrapped up in a towel inside a basket with the umbilical cord still attached. He took the baby to a location off East Commerce Street and called for help. The infant was "breathing weakly" when officers arrived.According to police, they have two women in custody in connection with this case. No word on any arrests at this time.
Authorities want to remind the public that if anyone feels unable to care for a newborn, they can safely surrender the baby at a designated location, such as a fire station, with no questions asked.
