Part of a bypass in Nottinghamshire was closed after a collision involving nine vehicles. The A1 southbound was shut near Fernwood, just south of Newark , with more than a mile of congestion being reported.
National Highways said there was one-and-a-half miles of congestion and traffic was being diverted through Fernwood. "The A1 is closed southbound within the B6326 junction at New Balderton with traffic diverted through Fernwood," it wrote on X. Traffic monitoring site Inrix said: "A1 Southbound closed, stationary traffic due to accident, nine vehicles involved from Greenfield Close / Newark Road to the B6326 ."Nottinghamshire Police, who attended the collision, said the incident happened amid poor weather conditions, which saw hailstones lash down on the A1.
Among the cars involved in the crash were a Renault, Vauxhall, Jaguar and Peugeot. The spokesperson said National Highways workers were currently clearing debris but it is unlikely the road will reopen before tomorrow.
