New Zealand faces challenges in modernising its military amid intense South Pacific rivalries between China and the West.
According to the review, New Zealand’s military is designed for a “relatively benign strategic environment” rather than the region’s current predicaments, including climate-fuelled challenges and intense strategic competition between China and the West. “We must be prepared to equip ourselves with trained personnel, assets and material, and appropriate international relationships in order to protect our own defence and national security.”
But late last month, Hipkins said New Zealand was “open to conversations” about a possible role in parts of the pact that would not violate its nuclear-free status. “An increasingly powerful China is using all its instruments of national power in ways that can pose challenges to existing international rules and norms.
