Gov. Kathy Hochul tells Murphy that New Jersey cannot unilaterally walk away from the interstate compact that created the Waterfront Commission

, calling the watchdog agency a key player in policing the region’s ports and in keeping out corruption and organized crime.

In a letter from Elizabeth Fine, counsel to the governor, Hochul’s office told Gov. Phil Murphy that the interstate compact between New York and New Jersey creating the Waterfront Commission more than 60 years ago did not contemplate one state simply walking away from the agreement. New Jersey has ended its agreement through an act passed by the state Legislature and signed into law by former Gov. Chris Christie.

At the same time, she said the commission has been and continues to be a key investigative partner in both state and federal criminal prosecutions in both New York and New Jersey. The commission — which includes one member from each state appointed by its governor — has wide jurisdiction over the region’s piers and terminals, including the ports in Newark, Elizabeth, Bayonne, Staten Island and Brooklyn. It certifies that those hired on the waterfront are not tied to organized crime and are otherwise fit to work in the shipping trade.
