Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) signed a bill into law on Wednesday extending the statute of limitations for survivors of second- and third-degree rape.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a bill into law Wednesday morning extending the statute of limitations for rape victims.

The legislation extends the period of time in which victims of second- and third-degree rape can take legal action from five years to 20 and 10 years, respectively. There is no statute of limitations for rape in the first degree. This is a historic step forward for survivors’ rights in New York. We are feeling proud to have witnessed @NYGovCuomo sign this key point of the #TIMESUP #NYSafetyAgenda into law, expanding access to justice for countless survivors throughout the state. pic.twitter.com/nIyDvnaFpG“If you’re a survivor of sexual assault, know that New York State is on your side,” Cuomo tweeted after signing the legislation.
