New York Governor Kathy Hochul signs a bill protecting the identities of doctors prescribing abortion medication, following the indictment of Dr. Margaret Carpenter in Louisiana for allegedly sending pills to a minor.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed a bill on Monday, February 3, 2025, that will protect the identities of doctors who prescribe abortion medications. The law, which took effect immediately, allows physicians to request that their names be removed from abortion pill bottles and replaced with the name of their healthcare practice on the medication label. This move comes in response to the indictment of New York Dr.
Margaret Carpenter and her company by a grand jury in West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, on Friday. Dr. Carpenter is facing charges for allegedly prescribing abortion pills online to a pregnant minor. This case marks a significant development as it appears to be the first instance of criminal charges against a doctor accused of sending abortion pills to another state since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022. Governor Hochul, a Democrat, has stated that she will not sign an extradition request to send Dr. Carpenter to Louisiana. She emphasized that authorities in Louisiana were able to identify the doctor because her name appeared on the medication label. Prosecutors in Louisiana allege that the minor experienced a medical emergency after taking the medication and required hospitalization. The girl's mother, who is also facing charges, surrendered to police on Friday. District Attorney Tony Clayton, the prosecutor in the Louisiana case, stated that the arrest warrant for Dr. Carpenter is 'nationwide' and that she could be arrested in states with anti-abortion laws. Physicians convicted of performing abortions, including those involving pills, face potential penalties of up to 15 years in prison, fines of up to $200,000, and the revocation of their medical licenses. Governor Hochul has pledged to push for additional legislation this year that would require pharmacists to comply with doctors' requests to omit their names from prescription labels. Dr. Carpenter had previously been sued by the Texas attorney general for allegations of sending abortion pills to Texas, although that case did not involve criminal charges. The use of pills has become the most prevalent method of abortion in the U.S. and is at the center of numerous political and legal battles in the fragmented landscape of state-specific abortion regulations following the overturning of Roe v. Wade
