New York’s Hester Street Fair community has found a way to continue gathering together online.
). “Really, I just wanted to give it to the neighborhood,” says Komurek, “to give people an opportunity to pay their rent, make some pocket money, meet new people, start a band—whatever they wanted to do to be seen or heard.”
On any given Saturday, between the months of April and October, you might have found yourself stopping by to eat a peking duck sandwich, flip through an 8ball zine, or to try on something hand-dyed. Or perhaps, you went just to feel like a part of the community that congregates there: a hip but diverse crowd of artists, skaters, and Chinatown locals. While the Coronavirus pandemic has currently taken the physical space away, the community has found a way to continue gathering together.
To adapt to the current landscape, Hester Street made their spring-time debut virtual, taking to Instagram last Saturday for a day of take-overs and online shopping experiences. “We think it’s important to keep it alive and give people an affordable and approachable place to meet and connect,” says Komurek. Starting at 11 a.m.
