Mark Longo, a New York resident, is calling for the return of his pet squirrel Peanut, a social media sensation, after state authorities seized the animal during a raid. The Department of Environmental Conservation, responding to multiple anonymous complaints, confiscated Peanut and a raccoon named Fred, treating Longo's home as if it were a drug operation.

A spokesperson for the DEC said in a statement that the agency started an investigation after receiving “multiple reports from the public about the potentially unsafe housing of wildlife that could carry rabies and the illegal keeping of wildlife as pets.” P’Nuts Freedom Farm Animal Sanctuary opened in April 2023 and now houses about 300 animals including horses, goats and alpacas, said Longo, who runs the sanctuary with his wife, Daniela, and other family members.
