A proposed bill in New York State seeks to mandate the teaching of the January 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot in K-12 schools, alongside significant historical events like the Holocaust, slavery, and the Great Famine in Ireland.
New York State Assemblyman Charles Lavine, a Democrat representing Glen Cove, recently proposed legislation that aims to mandate the teaching of the January 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot in K-12 schools. Assembly Bill A3966, introduced last month, seeks to amend existing state law requiring discussions on significant historical events alongside topics like the Holocaust, slavery, and the Great Famine in Ireland.
The intent behind these lessons, as stated in the current law, is to cultivate a sense of patriotism, civic responsibility, and moral and intellectual growth in students. According to the proposed legislation, students aged 8 and above should receive these educational lessons. Assemblyman Lavine, in a press release, emphasized the importance of ensuring that the events of January 6, 2021, are not forgotten, despite efforts by the current president to downplay or dismiss their significance. He highlighted the unprecedented nature of the attack, comparing it to the burning of the Capitol by British forces during the War of 1812. Lavine stressed the responsibility of New York educators to guide students in understanding this pivotal historical moment and analyzing its lasting legacy. The introduction of A3966 follows closely on the heels of former President Donald Trump's decision to grant pardons to individuals convicted in connection with the Capitol riot. Trump stated that approximately 1,500 people would benefit from these pardons, claiming they had served their sentences unfairly. This move came amidst ongoing political discourse surrounding the January 6th attack and its implications. Notably, former President Joe Biden had previously issued preemptive pardons for members of the House committee responsible for investigating the riot, including Representative Bennie Thompson and former Representative Liz Cheney, both of whom received the Presidential Citizens Medal from Biden. Trump had previously criticized Cheney and Thompson, accusing them of destroying evidence and calling for their prosecution. Cheney and Thompson responded to their pardons by stating that they were exonerated not for breaking the law but for upholding it
