Tom Thibodeau is returning to the NBA sidelines.
The New York Knicks are hiring Thibodeau to be their new head coach, USA TODAY Sports has confirmed. Thibodeau, 62, and the Knicks are finalizing a five-year contract.Thibodeau was fired as Minnesota Timberwolves coach and president of basketball operations in the middle of his third season with the organization in 2019.
He will not have that same front office power with former agent Leon Rose recently installed as team president. The Knicks fired former coach David Fizdale 22 games into last season, and Mike Miller served the remainder of the season as the interim. Other reported candidates for the Knicks vacancy included Los Angeles Lakers assistant Jason Kidd and former Brooklyn Nets coach Kenny Atkinson.
A native of New Britain, Connecticut, Thibodeau served as an assistant with the Knicks from 1996-2004. He will be the 13th head coach in 17 years.
