New York is following California's lead and implementing rules requiring all new car sales to be EVs.
, we speculated that other states would follow its lead. After all, many states use California's CARB guidelines as, well, guidelines for their own emissions rules—New York included. We call out the Empire State specifically because, during an event commemorating National Drive Electric Week, New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced that she would direct the State Department of Environmental Conservation to"" that would require the sale of all cars, pickup trucks, and SUVs sold in New York State to be zero emissions by 2035.
"With sustained state and federal investments, our actions are incentivizing New Yorkers, local governments, and businesses to make the transition to electric vehicles," said Governor Hochul. Just like in California, the New York legislation will have a percentage requirement for zero emission vehicle sales that will increase incrementally year over year. Beginning 2026, 35 percent of new vehicle sales must be ZEVs. By 2030 the percentage threshold jumps to 60% and finally 100% in 2035. You may remember that Governor Newsom faced some criticism on social media due to the fact that just a week after announcing the California ban on gasoline vehicles, the state was hit by a severe heatwave and an advisory. The ill-timed situation called California's ability to support a 100-percent EV transition in to question, even though the state is working to bolster its power-generation capabilities over the coming decades. Obviously, New York deals with vastly different weather conditions. The state may be in a better position to deal with a full-on EV transition but automakers will be forced to rise to the challenge.about meeting California's 100-percent ZEV requirements saying"Realistically speaking, it seems rather difficult to really achieve them." At the moment, many automakers are struggling to assemble even conventional gas-fed vehicles due to continued supply chain issues that have had a ripple effect that has spread industry-wide. Not to mention that many desirable new EVs such as the
