In response to a Louisiana indictment of a New York doctor for prescribing abortion pills online, New York Governor Kathy Hochul enacted legislation to safeguard physicians providing abortion medications. The new law allows doctors to request pharmacies print only the practice name on prescription labels, concealing their personal information. Governor Hochul also vowed not to cooperate with any extradition order for the indicted doctor.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul is taking action to shield doctors who prescribe abortion medications. The announcement came on the heels of a New York doctor being indicted by a grand jury in Louisiana for allegedly prescribing abortion pills online. Hochul signed legislation that allows physicians prescribing abortion medications to request pharmacies print only the practice name on prescription labels instead of their personal names. This change is effective immediately.
'Trying to have another level of protection for these doctors who are out there on the front lines, doing what they know is right, what they were trained to do. We must be there to support them,' the governor stated at the bill signing. Hochul also declared her refusal to cooperate with any extradition order for the doctor facing charges.Last Friday, a grand jury in West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana indicted Dr. Margaret Carpenter and her company for allegedly prescribing abortion pills online to a pregnant minor. Prosecutors allege the girl suffered a medical emergency after taking the medication and required hospitalization. The extent of her pregnancy at the time remains unclear. This case appears to be the first instance of criminal charges against a doctor accused of sending abortion pills to another state since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022. Louisiana has a near-total abortion ban, and physicians convicted of performing abortions, including with pills, face up to 15 years in prison, $200,000 in fines, and the revocation of their medical license. Carpenter was previously sued by the attorney general of Texas for allegations of sending abortion pills to the state, although that case did not involve criminal charges
