New York Democrats are urging President Joe Biden to choose New York City for the party’s annual convention over top contenders Chicago and Atlanta, with lawmakers openly taking a jab at the latter over its abortion laws.
A group of top New York Democrats, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries , sent a letter to Biden on Friday urging him to choose New York City as the host for the Democratic National Convention in 2024. The letter marks an escalation in the fight to host the key event during the next presidential cycle after party leaders narrowed down its list to the three major cities.
“Following the reversal of Roe, New York has served as a national leader in the fight to preserve and protect women’s rights — promptly passing several legislative actions at the city and state levels,” the lawmakers wrote. “This starkly contrasts with states like Georgia, which quickly moved to allow one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the nation.”
The letter did not specifically target Chicago as a competitor. Instead, the lawmakers went on to tout New York’s investments in infrastructure — a major priority in Biden’s legislative agenda.Local lawmakers are fighting for the opportunity to host the key event, as the Democratic National Convention is held to nominate the party’s presidential and vice presidential candidates and adopt an official party platform for the next election cycle.
A final decision on where the 2024 Democratic National Convention will be held is not expected to be announced until the spring, similar to the timeline used in 2020.
