A New York couple's dream of moving into their new home has turned into a nightmare after an unwanted guest refused to vacate the property. Rochester homeowners Ryan Folts and his girlfriend Caitlin Pitts purchased the foreclosure home at an auction last January, aware that it was occupied. However, they were unprepared for the ordeal that awaited them.
Folts recounted to News 8 that he offered the squatter $500 a month to leave, but was met with a chilling threat: 'If I came back, he was going to take my life.' Despite their attempts to resolve the situation amicably, Folts and Pitts found themselves battling legal hurdles. They diligently pursued all available legal avenues to evict the squatter, including court proceedings. Folts expressed his frustration, stating that they had taken all the necessary legal steps, yet the squatter remained entrenched in the house. Adding to their anguish, Folts claimed that the Rochester Police Department, while visiting the home, refused to forcibly remove the squatter, citing a lack of legal authority. Rochester Police Capt. Greg Bello corroborated this, emphasizing that the department's role is not to execute evictions, which fall under the jurisdiction of the city marshal. Bello further clarified that a court order authorizing police to forcibly enter the property for the purpose of arresting the occupant was absent. With the initial eviction deadline of late December passed, Folts and Pitts are left in limbo, facing mounting financial burdens. They have been forced to reside in hotels and rent storage units, incurring significant expenses. The couple expressed their desperation, appealing for public assistance in resolving this seemingly intractable situation. They pointed out the inequity of the situation, where a squatter occupies their home rent-free while they bear the financial strain. Folts and Pitts expressed concerns about their safety, feeling vulnerable and targeted.
