The legislation adopted by lawmakers in the Democratic-run state legislature aims to tackle climate change by reducing NY's dependence on natural gas, which can cause harmful air pollution. New York becomes first U.S. state to ban gas in new buildings:

New York state has passed a law banning gas stoves in most new buildings from 2026

The appliances became an unlikely flashpoint in America's bitterly partisan politics earlier this year when a federal official suggested the government might ban new gas stoves over concerns they cause harmful air pollution indoors. According to the US Energy Department, 52 percent of households in New York state use natural gas for heating or cooking.
