New York Attorney General Letitia James warns hospitals that complying with President Trump's executive order restricting federal funding for gender-affirming care for young people could violate state law. James emphasizes that New York's anti-discrimination laws require healthcare facilities to provide these treatments.

On Monday, New York Attorney General Letitia James sent a clear message to hospitals: complying with President Donald Trump's executive order on gender-affirming care could violate state law. The order, which aims to restrict federal funding for these treatments for young people, has sparked a fierce debate. James, in a letter to healthcare facilities, emphasized that refusing to provide gender-affirming care would contradict New York's anti-discrimination laws.

She stated, 'Regardless of the availability of federal funding, we write to further remind you of your obligations to comply with New York State laws.' This statement comes as some hospitals in Colorado, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., have announced a temporary halt to gender-affirming treatments for minors while they review the implications of the order.Gender-affirming care encompasses a wide range of interventions, including social, psychological, behavioral, and medical support, aimed at helping individuals align their physical appearance and social roles with their gender identity. This can involve hormone therapy and, in some cases, surgery. The care is often considered vital for the well-being of transgender youth, as research suggests they face a higher risk of suicidal behavior. A recent study published in JAMA Pediatrics indicates that fewer than one in 1,000 adolescents in the U.S. with commercial insurance received puberty blockers or hormones from 2018 to 2022. The study, however, did not examine surgical procedures among transgender adolescents.President Trump's executive order, titled 'Protecting Children from Chemical and Surgical Mutilation,' directs federally run insurance programs, such as TRICARE for military families and Medicaid, to exclude coverage for gender-affirming care. It also calls on the Department of Justice to pursue legal action and legislation to oppose these practices. This order has ignited a legal battle, with a lawsuit in North Dakota already proceeding to trial. The conflict extends beyond the healthcare realm, as James and Trump have clashed previously in legal disputes, particularly investigations into the Trump Organization's finances. James, a Democrat, launched several investigations into Trump's business dealings in 2019, accusing him of misleading banks and insurers about his assets. In September 2022, she filed a civil lawsuit against Trump, his children, and the Trump Organization, alleging a 'fraudulent scheme' to inflate their assets. Trump has consistently dismissed James' actions as politically motivated, labeling her as part of a 'witch hunt' against him
