A significant snowfall across New York and New Jersey on Sunday is followed by a dangerous arctic chill bringing dangerously cold temperatures for the next few days.

A significant snowfall blanketed New York and New Jersey on Sunday, with some areas accumulating over half a foot of snow. While the city saw accumulations ranging from 2 to 4 inches, certain regions in Orange and Dutchess counties in New York, and Morris County in New Jersey, experienced the heaviest snowfall. Highland Mills, New York, recorded the highest total with 8.1 inches, closely followed by Hopewell Junction with 8 inches. Chester saw 7.7 inches, and Congers recorded 6.5 inches.

In New Jersey, Kinnelon received 7 inches of snow. Central Park in New York City measured 1.6 inches, while LaGuardia Airport recorded 3.5 inches. As the snow subsides, attention now shifts to an impending arctic chill that will bring dangerously cold temperatures to the region. Over the next few days, temperatures will plummet into the teens, with wind chills dropping below zero, particularly overnight. Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to be the coldest days, with temperatures hovering in the teens and wind chills making it feel as low as 10 degrees Fahrenheit. While temperatures are expected to moderate slightly towards the latter half of the week, they will remain below freezing until Friday. The cold snap necessitates taking precautions. Public works crews are diligently working to clear roadways in anticipation of the freezing temperatures, utilizing salt and calcium chloride to melt ice at lower temperatures. Businesses are also taking proactive steps to treat their sidewalks and prevent potential slips and falls. It is crucial to be aware that bridges and overpasses are particularly susceptible to freezing, and while main streets may be clear, secondary areas like parking lots, driveways, and sidewalks can remain slushy and hazardous. Residents are urged to dress warmly in layers and be mindful of exposed skin.
