As of Tuesday, any woman living in or visiting New York state can walk into a pharmacy and purchase birth control without a prescription. Gov. Kathy Hochul made the announcement alongside Health Commissioner James McDonald saying this isn't just about the convenience, it's about the state's values. The order signed by McDonald allows pharmacists to provide three types of hormonal birth control without a prescription.
This includes an oral hormonal pill, a hormonal vaginal ring, and a hormonal contraceptive patch. The new order aims to improve access to birth control, especially for women in low-income populations or rural communities where doctors are not easily accessible. This move is seen as a step towards expanding healthcare and empowering pharmacists to play a larger role in providing healthcare services
