Penn State coach Cael Sanderson said on Monday that talks about a new wrestling practice facility on campus are ongoing. Joe Hermitt | jhermitt@pennlive.comNothing is etched in stone and funding has yet to be secured but a new practice facility for wrestling at Penn State is in the talking stages.
The top-ranked Nittany Lions, winners of 12 of the last 14 NCAA Wrestling Championships under coach Cael Sanderson, work out in the Lorenzo Wrestling Complex attached to Rec Hall. They compete in Rec Hall and Bryce Jordan Center. Improvements such as new locker rooms and hot and cold tubs have been made the past few years, and the room holds four mats, a small bleacher seating area for team meetings, some stationary bikes, a small conference room and an adjacent weight room also used for men’s and women’s volleyball. Sanderson stressed at his Monday media access that the current facility is “great” and that “we’re blessed to have this facility.” He added that conversations about a new facility at an undisclosed location on campus have been ongoing but that funding is needed.“Obviously, we’re not relying on facilities to get recruits or anything like that,” he added. “I mean, those aren’t the recruits you want; it’s more the culture and just the mindset and the people. “But, the way the sport is set up, a little bit more space would be nice, because we are really crowded. At the same time, parking is a nightmare for our kids; parking is not convenient, so they have to figure that out, and we try to help them.” Sanderson reiterated that the program is “very grateful” for its current facility. “It’s awesome,” he said, “but it’s been a long time, and if we can make it happen and raise the money we need to build a new facility, that’s what we’re trying to do.”Cael said 141-pound junior Aaron Nagao, who suffered a right arm injury at Army in late November, needs more time. Cael Nasdeo has been Nagao’s replacement. “Nasdeo has gotten that opportunity and you can see he’s right there; every match he seems to be getting better,” Sanderson said. “It’s just going to take time,” he added about Nagao. “We’re waiting to hear from our doctors and trainers; they make those calls 100%.” Josh Barr, a NCAA runner-up at 197 pounds in 2025 as a redshirt freshman, injured his ribs in the U-23 World Championships in October and has yet to compete for the top-ranked Nittany Lions. Connor Mirasola has been his replacement. “He’s getting close,” Sanderson said about Barr. “If you see him, he’s in here scrapping already so he should be back soon.” And freshman Dalton Perry from Central Mountain High School is recovering from a knee injury at the Army Black Knight Invite. “He’s doing better than expected … quicker than expected,” Sanderson said. “It’s not like a season-ending injury or anything, but he’s doing well.”
